Trash Talkers featured in The Plain Dealer

Posted on: February 23rd, 2013 by Mr. T No Comments

If you haven’t heard, The Cleveland Plain Dealer ran a featured story today in the Saturday “Pop Arts” section of the daily paper!

The article was written by fellow Cleveland drummer and full-time journalist Chuck Yarborough, who also interviewed seniors Ethan Ling and Tony Heffner.

Here’s a taste – read the entire article here.

All right, parents: Who among us hasn’t had to struggle to get their sons to spend some quality time with trash cans?

Surprise! Surprise! For at least 32 families that’s not a problem .¤.¤. sort of. Those would be the families of the boys who are members of the St. Edward High School Trash Talkers and make music on all sorts of rubbish containers.

John Goers, whose son Brendan was part of the original group that made its debut in 2003, serves as the adviser, and Dominic Tancredi, a local drum teacher and owner of Woodshed Stage Art, does the teaching and composes many of the pieces the Trash Talkers play. Goers, who is the director of physical plant and grounds at the Lakewood school, and Tancredi, whose company specializes in custom-designed bass drumheads for local and national acts, are St. Ed’s alumni.

VIDEO: Ethan Ling “Crossing Over”

We sure do put in a ton of time with this group, but we also do lots of other cool things (outside of school of course!).

Check out this video from Ethan Ling (a Senior here at St. Edward High School and 4-year Trash Talker veteran). He’s been writing some great original songs via his indie-folk project “Heavy Boots”.

What do you think of his original tune? Does he have what it takes?

Video: On Tour

Got 5 minutes? Check out this great video behind the scenes of Trash Talkers on Tour!

We performed at five Catholic elementary schools as part of Catholic Schools Week, performing for 2,000 excited kids! This is our eighth year doing the grade school tour – this year we had so much interest that we’ve added a second day. By the end of this week, we’ll have performed at ten schools! (The most difficult part was convincing our guys to skip two days of school…)

There’s also a cool photo spread on Cleveland.com from the day as well – check it out here.

Special thanks to St. Edward’s own KC McKenna for tagging along on our first day of tour stops for 2013 and getting this footage!

What do you think of the video? When’s the last time you saw us perform live? Comment below and let us know!

On our first of two days of “Trash Talkers On Tour“, we had a few embedded journalists from The Plain Dealer tagging along!

Check out the pics from the Plain Dealer’s website, Cleveland.com from our performance at Lakewood Catholic Academy. (Here’s a link to the full slideshow.)

The Trash Talkers performed at five Catholic elementary schools on Monday as part of Catholic Schools week, performing for more than 2,000 students. We will perform for another five schools on Friday.

Cans at Center Court

The Trash Talkers had a great gig last night, playing on our home turf for a packed house of students and fans!

The St. Edward High School varsity basketball team beat the nationally-ranked Mater Dei, breaking their 41-game winning streak with a 58-41 victory. The team flew in from southern California (and boy, were their arms tired). The game was televised in Ohio and California, and the team included former St. Eds player Elijah Brown (son of NBA coach Mike Brown).

We performed a few of our newest pieces of music at Center Court at halftime to a standing-room-only gymnasium of screaming fans.

The event was well-covered on local news stations. Check out the pic on WKYC Channel 3’s slide show of the game! (We’re looking for video of the performance and will post it if we find it – let us know if you saw us on the news!)

We’re looking forward to our 2-day “tour” performing at 10 elementary schools next week – check out where we’re playing here!

Thanks again for your continued support! YOU are the reason we do this!

Trash Talkers On Tour!

Posted on: January 16th, 2013 by Mr. T No Comments

On Monday, January 28 and Friday, February 1, we will load up the yellow limo and head to 10 Catholic elementary schools in the Greater Cleveland area.

The performances coincide with Catholic Schools Week and are part of our annual “Trash Talkers On Tour” program. In past years we’ve crammed 5 performances into one school day – this year we’re cramming 10 shows into two days! It’s a hectic schedule, but also a lot of fun!

(NOTE: As much as we’d love to have you, these are strictly PRIVATE performances for the student body and faculty only.)

St. Edward High School Trash Talkers - Trash Talkers On Tour 2013

Here are the schools we’ll be performing at this year:

  • St. Anthony
  • St. Mark
  • St. Joseph
  • St. Raphael
  • St.Bridget
  • St. Adalbert
  • St. Chris
  • Holy Trinity
  • West Park Catholic Academy
  • Lakewood Catholic Academy

These gigs are a great chance to share our music with the youngsters and show them another cool thing happening at the school! We absolutely LOVE performing for grade school kids.

We’re debuting three new pieces of music, a few new members, and a few more surprises you’ll love. A few students from each school may also get the chance to perform as an “Honorary Trash Talker”, too!

Once again – unfortunately, these are Private performances for the school’s students and staff only and are not open to the public.

We get more requests to perform than is physically possible, even with the added day. If you’d like to book us to perform at your place, just drop us a line!

Are we coming to your school? Where should we play next year? Have you seen us perform during Catholic Schools Week? Let us know – post a comment below!

New Music & Ugly Sweaters

Posted on: January 8th, 2013 by Mr. T No Comments

Hey there! Thought I’d post a quick update to let you know what we’ve been up to!

After taking some much-needed time off after the Burning River Festival at the end of July (our last gig of the 2012 Season), we started rehearsing in early November to prepare for our first gig of the 2013 Season – Light Up Lakewood on December 1. We also performed again for a special group of people at the Parma Adult Activity Center, one of our favorite annual gigs.

We took advantage of our time off on Christmas break to get three solid days of “camp” in (we essentially holed ourselves up in an windowless room for 8 hours with nothing more than trash cans, drumsticks, cheese pizza and 2-liters of Mountain Dew). We even had an ugly sweater party!

Our newest members learned most of the current show in about 2 days (impressive!). We’ve got a great group of Freshman this year who are fitting in nicely. They’re gearing up for some upcoming gigs at some St. Eds events in Jan/Feb (…more on that when we can share)!

Our veterans (some who have been with the group for 4 years) are busy learning an all-new set of pieces (songs) for this season. They’re basically doubling the amount of music they’ve already learned, a grand feat to say the least.

During our camp day, our Gold team vets we were able to learn 3 incredibly complex pieces, more difficult than we’ve ever attempted. We have one more scheduled, and we’ll learn another 3-4. We’re setting the bar pretty high this time!

We’re looking forward to performing at several elementary schools for Catholic Schools Week at the end of January, so stay tuned! I hope you’re as anxious as we are to kick this season into high gear!

Thanks again for your continued support! We appreciate every “Like” and “Share” on our Facebook page, and every time you spread the word about our new website.

– Mr. T

As we wrap up another great Trash Talker’s season, we would like to take some time to thank all our wonderful fans for their continued support! All of you are the reason that we continue to do what we do, so keep cheering and we’ll keep playing!

See you in December 2012!

Brett Baker, Steve Bowman and Rich Redmond become Trash Talkers!

National touring drummers Brett Baker (Jay-Z/Eminem), Steve Bowman (Counting Crows), and Rich Redmond (Jason Aldean) take a break from their Shedfest sound check and bang on some trash cans. We think they may have done this before…
